Books can impact lives and that’s a fact. Books can lift our spirits or move our emotions, but can you turn a book into a musical? That’s what writers Joe Tracz and Rob Rokicki and director Stephen Brackett are going to do. Fans of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series were shocked to hear that the first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, will be a musical off-Broadway beginning March 23, 2017.

The musical will begin strictly limited engagement performances on March 23, 2017, but will be opened to the public April 4th through May 6th. Sadly, the performance will not be showing near us, but it will be on Broadway.  Actor Chris McCarrell will be playing the main character, Percy Jackson. Author of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan, says, “ I haven’t seen the play either, but I can heartily endorse it based on feedback from the people I care about most – my readers”.

When I found out about the musical, I wondered what the students and staff at West Valley would think. So, I started to ask people, “ What do you think of a book being turned into a musical?”

English teacher, Mr. Vietti says, “I think that any way it can promote the books because some people like movies or musicals, I’m all for it.”

Sophomore Ashley Finck, who is a fan of the books said, “ I’m conflicted because how is Percy going to fight monsters and sing at the same time?”

Hillary Cargile, a freshman who attends West Valley High School, says, “ Well I’m excited about it because it’s one of my favorite book series (Percy Jackson and The Olympians), but I’m really worried that they’re going to mess it up or not go by the books.”

Overall, it could be a good way to promote people to read more, and could make fans of the books happy.   On March 23, 2017 it will be strictly limited to engagements, but will be opened to the public April 4th through May 6th.  Tickets for the musical can be purchased at www.LightningThiefMusical.com and cost $65-$85.
