West Valley Wrestling Coach Dan Eckley thinks the 2017-18 season is going to be really good.  I was  part of the team last year ,and I think it is a very good sport, it’s a lot of fun and it builds character. Here are some quotes from people on this year’s team.  Sophomore Caden Arlandson says “I’m very excited for the new freshman to come out and there are a lot of returning wrestlers from last year and I think we have a good shot at winning sections.  Another sophomore, Amos Burwell says he sees a lot more intensity in this years team, “I’m really looking forward to it. In order to wrestle you have to put out a lot of work like practicing five days a week, then you have to get up at five o’clock to get to the tournament.  So as you can see it takes up a lot of time and hard work but it’s definitely worth it.”

There are some negatives to wrestling, because you have to drop a lot of weight.  Last year,  I dropped twenty pounds just to make weight.  It makes you physically strong and you get into shape, probably the best shape you will ever be in.  The reason I chose to join the wrestling team last year was to get ready for football and it helped a lot.  I felt a lot faster and in much better shape and endurance. Another thing I like about wrestling is it is like having another family.  You get really close with everybody on the team and you meet a lot of new people.  It seems like all of the parents get along and all of them are “good-hearted” people.

After the scrimmage at Red Bluff High, it is safe to say that the West Valley JV Wrestling team is off to a great start of the new season. The team, led by Coach Ray Lobslinger and others, showed little weakness in the scrimmage and is working hard to prepare for the upcoming tournament in Corning. With the punishing workouts and constant work put in each practice, we are only getting stronger as a team.

This JV team is tough, mean, and highly conditioned. Amos Burwell, a returning JV wrestler and league champ says, ”I think they’re going to do great. We had many JV wrestlers place first in league last year, and we won NAL as well. We never lost a duel and this year should be even better this year with the hard work and intensity that these JV wrestlers are putting out.”

West Valley is coming off of a great season and plan to repeat that season this year.  With every great team however, comes a few weaknesses.  Unfortunately, some wrestlers aren’t returning this year, as Varsity Wrestler Caden Arlandson explains. ”Many of the Junior and Senior wrestlers aren’t returning this year, which will make the experienced JV wrestlers move up to Varsity, which will hurt the JV team in the heavyweights.”

Although this could pose as a big problem for the JV team, it is also one of the only problems that this team has this season. With Coach Eckley making sure that the athletes have the best coaching and practices, this team looks unstoppable.  Coming up is West Valley’s first JV Tournament in Corning, and the wrestlers are more than eager to start their season off with a victory.  The team already looks very skilled, and they will only get better this season.
