After losing 8 out of 9 starters from the previous NAL League Championship Team, Varsity Head Coach Paul Vietti had a lot of thinking to do for the upcoming season.  There were a lot of new athletes out on the field wanting to continue the success and keep the NAL League in there hands.  Seniors Jack Barnette, Roebey Utvick, Marco Rincon, Wayde Henderson, and Tommy Ross all wanted to have a great season like the year before when they won league,  but they felt like they weren’t going to be the team they were last year.

They were hoping they would be more than a league champ team, they wanted to be a section contender. With all the hard work and dedication to the 2016-2017 season, they flew by most of their league opponents. But it all came down to them beating University Prep by a score of 11-1 and they put themselves in the playoffs.  On there way to playoffs the Eagles hit a roadblock. Starting Outfielder Derek Ray had to have a shoulder surgery which took him out of the game against Red Bluff at West Valley.  Pitcher Jack Barnette went frame to frame until allowing a run after a RBI (Runs Batted In) Double. The Eagles ended up losing the first round playoff game to Red Bluff, 4-1. Now that the 2016-2017 season is over Coach Vietti had a few words to say about his baseball team. “These kids came together and worked their tails off all season long, and they will forever be remembered as the 2017 NAL Champs.”

Coach Vietti has to start thinking about the 2017-2018 season with a lot of great talent gone.  He needs to think about who he will play at each position, and with an injury to Brock Taylor, backup catcher Josh Pickard will likely be in the squat.  Others returning from last year’s squad include Christian Magana, Derek Ray, Hayden Klein, Hunter Bloom, Jake McDougall, Johnny Ross and Wyatt Harding.
